Liverpool University Rugby

LURFC is currently going through exciting times both on and off the pitch. The investment in a new Director of Rugby from Sale Sharks, and latterly RugbyPerformance.co.uk, has improved training and nutritional standards throughout the club.

This partnership with Sale Sharks has seen several players play for the Sale Jets, both this season and last season, as well as all first team players spending time at Sale's training facilites in Carrington. There remains possiblities for serious rugby progression for those who have the talent and desire to reach those levels- this route to playing for Sale is very much alive and active for players who are at the right levels. LURFC players have also been placed with top foreign teams, including premiership teams in Spain and placements with the Natal Sharks Academy

Fully supported by EAS Sports Nutrition, the club promotes a commitment to training, self discipline and a personal work ethic.  Players are currently working hard to improve their physical capabilities; this is pointless without a good diet, regular training, and ensuring that all the players take part. Currently the Rugby Squad consists of a group of self motivated individuals with a commitment to quality rugby.

Players have the opportunity to work individually with the coaching staff to improve personal aspects of their game, through the use of performance profiling and goal setting.  One to one coaching is also available, and for those lucky enough to earn a Sports Scholarship there is also one to one Strength and Conditioning training available.

With training facilities that are being invested in every year, a 3G rubber crumb training pitch last season, and video analysis suite this year, it is a good place to play your rugby right now.

LURFC offers rugby to cater for all standards, attracting players of all calibre, both new and experienced. LURFC runs three teams in the BUCS leagues that offer regular competitive rugby for university students every Wednesday afternoon. LURFC also runs a Saturday team in the Inter Departmental League to offer a less serious yet competitive opportunity for regular rugby.

Freshers play a big part in the club's success. This season 10 first years have had the opportunity to play 1st XV rugby, giving these players the experience and confindence necessary to perform on the big stage.

The 1st team are currently playing in North 1, and are seeking promotion, having only lost a handful of games this season, in a league including teams from Sheffield, York, Manchester and Durham. The squad train hard, with regular fitness sessions in the university gym, and advice given on key issues such as diet and supplements. If you are serious about playing rugby at a high standard then LURFC is the club for you.

The 2nd team plays a vital role in maintaining the high standard of first team rugby. They play in North 2A and train with the 1st team to form the 1st team training squad.

The 3rd team have been consistently successful in recent years following their promotion to North 3A and form a solid base from which players can progress to the 1st team training squad.  The 3rd team has proven its worth and developed players for the next step up. Both the second team and third team are chasing promotion for the season 2009-10.

Off the field, social events play an important role in LURFC with weekly socials and the monthly AU nights ensuring that as much fun is had off the field as on it. Highlights of the year include an overseas tour, gentlemen’s evening and the end of season dinner.

The benefit of the players’ commitment is beginning to show through already, as other sportsmen are becoming attracted to the ethos of the club.  Take your sports seriously, work hard and take pride in what you do on the field. Remember that all work and no play makes for a very boring degree!
